Before Sunrise
The Greatest Love Story Ever Filmed?

(Texto anexo às "Crónicas do Danyel Sak")

Back in 1980 I saw the movie "Somewhere In Time". I thought it was the best
love story ever filmed. It was written by science fiction author Richard
Matheson of all people! That changed in 1995 when I saw "Before Sunrise".
This was the best love story ever filmed. In October, 2002, I met Quentin
Tarantino at the "Frolic Room" in Hollywood, California. I mentioned to him
that I thought "Before Sunrise" was the best love story ever filmed. He
agreed. This coming from the writer/director of the greatest martial arts
film ever, "Kill Bill Volume One. Need I say more?

Extremely deep & wonderful story!

It was by accident that I was scanning the TV channels and found this
wonderful film about two beautiful human beings who become attracted to each
other in a very innocent and virgin like approach to each other. Ethan Hawke
(Jesse) "Tape" '01 and Julie Delpy (Celine) "ER" 94 TV Series (Nicole). This
gal and guy, will warm your very heart and soul and make you think deeply
into your past relationships and how you really wish you had followed your
hearts strings with a guy or gal you deep down loved and lost track of over
the years. Jesse and Celine have great conversation, and deep eye contact
with a great magnetic explosion between the two of them. I am looking
forward to the SEQUEL to this film in 2004 and if you have viewed this film,
you will feel the same way.

ahhh... the memories

I just watched this movie this afternoon after flipping channels and
stumbling on it. I became so engrossed in it as I was watching that I
completely tuned everything else out. I read some of the other comments
posted about it, and yeah, I can see your point if you didn't enjoy it or
find it believable. It's not a movie that was made for everyone. But oh, it
was definitely made for me!
Last summer I actually had a frightfully similar experience while in Europe.
I was in Paris and made a surreal connection with a Parisian named Seb one
night, knowing I would be leaving him and our amazing connection behind. So,
can it happen? Yes. Does it often? No. And that, my friends, is why we
become so riveted and pricked in the heart and mind while watching this
movie. Whether you have had an experience close to this or not, it still can
strike a cord in all of us. We all long for personal connections. Even if
you do not believe in love at first sight or chance occurrences that impact
us forever, a 'what if?' and 'maybe...' are always present.
So take it or leave it, just realize that this movie was made for some of us
more than others. I just wish I had it back in high school and could have
used it in my Forensics or Drama class. Would have been a perfect
intellectual, witty dialogue to use.

It may change your way of life.

First let me say that Before Sunrise, like all movies, is NOT a movie for
all tastes. It appears some folks are less smart to acknowledge this fact,
but it is remarkable to contemplate the kind of outright dislike this small
harmless movie generates from some people. For me, like most folks here,
Before Sunrise struck a deep chord in me, I was truly stunned, moved,
inspired by it. This is a movie that ultimately benefits from more than one
viewing. It creates some of the most awesomely unforgettable feelings and
emotions you can possibly imagine. It is impossible to imagine this world
without ever thinking about the kind of inspirational feelings I got from
it.
The movie works as a communion of two fragile souls that are starting to get
to know each other. It is very intelligent and inspiring, not so much in how
one conversation necessarily ties into the next or the significance of the
topics of Jesse and Celine's discussions, but rather the little nuances, the
perfectly articulate responses they provoke from each other. It captures an
honest, romantic, yet fleeting human emotion that is starting to blossom in
the awesomely sublime Viennese milieu; it convinces us that their evanescent
relationship might be the greatest compliment in the world. And what happens
after that night is open for debate, but I never doubt that they won't each
other again.
The facile comments by RockytheBear and the below user are hopeless examples
of a doctrinaire dissenter unwilling to accept and respect those who love
this movie.
See it and it may change your way of life.

One of the best romantic movies ever ...

There is not much that can be said about this movie that was not said
before. Linklater has accomplished the impossible and has landed 2 of his
movies (Dazed and Confused and Before Sunrise) in my Top 10 list of favorite
movies.
This movie is quite frankly one of the most overlooked gems of modern
cinema. I am a guy, 32, and have seen this movie at least over a dozen times
and has always left me with a teary eye. Julie Delpy is like and angel from
heaven that has unsuspectedly landed in Ethan Hawke's life and ours. All the
key scenes have been mentioned before, the record shop listening booth (this
one had to be improvised, as I don't think this is possible to be pulled of
by the most talented of actors), the imaginary phone calls, the kiss on top
of the Prater, the talk about having/not having sex. The sadness of the
empty spaces without them at the end ...
Maybe it has more meaning for me than for others as my ex girlfriend looked
like Delpy somewhat and out last encounter was in an airport under similar
circumstances and promises as the ending of the movie, but this is a
definite recommendation for anyone that thrives on that great feeling when
you have with someone that just invades your soul and you want to spend
every waking moment with them. Kudos for Linklater for being able to capture
this so faithfully and unpretentiously. A once in a lifetime achievement!
One of the best films ever!

Simplicity at its elegant best

Before Sunrise is the sort of movie that is very rarely made. The entire
film is based on the conversations of two characters, who meet accidentally
and gradually begin to like each other. There are no supporting actors of
any sort. Apart from cameos and extras, the entire film is just two people
walking the streets of Vienna and getting to know one another. This is
perhaps the films greatest strength, its ability to keep you draw into what
is just the regular conversation of two people. There are no special effects
or the typical hollywood style soundtrack.
Elegant and Simple. One of the most remarkable films of the 90's.

Travelogue to love

BEFORE SUNRISE (1995) ***1/2 Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy. Filmmaker Richard
Linklater's winning and intelligent meet cute/strangers on a train romantic
comedy set in Europe with American slacker Hawke picking up sultry French
student Delpy, falling in love and disregarding the fact they only have one
magical night together. Clever dialogue (talk, talk, talk) and some truly
innocent comic moments make for a valentine to those who believe in the
power of love. Endearingly captivating brilliance.

It sweetly lingers

A lovely sweet story of how two young people decide to take a leap of faith,
and in doing so, find a real connection.
While this is not a big, dramatic film, it succeeds on its own modest
merits, and leaves you wondering what happens afterwards to the the two lead
characters.
Both Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy give completely natural, unmannered
performances (although I did desperately want to shave off Mr. Hawke's
annoying goatee throughout!), and managed to make their characters real.
The movie reminded me of being in my 20s, and the kind of experience that
can happen with a total stranger. It will leave you smiling and thoughtful
at the same time.
If I were 20, this would make me want to hop the next plane to Vienna

the most wonderful film

i almost didn't bother watching this film. while i like richard linklater, i
certainly did not like "the newton boys", and i was sure that this was
another studio produced clunker. but i gave it a shot for the heck of it. i
am so glad i did. this is the most perfect movie i have ever seen. by far my
favourite. it holds up even after about fifty viewings. it hits every single
not exactly right. a few of my favourite scenes are the scene in the
listening booth with the kath bloom song, the poet scene and his poem, and
scene where they pretend to talk to their friends on the telephone. the
ending is so wonderful and anti hollywood that i cannot believe they let
rick get away with it. depending on your point of view, check out "waking
life" to find out what happens to the couple after the movie. it could be
real, or it could be a dream though, you'll never know... i wish more people
knew about this flick!
